Photography for Small Businesses, Artisans, and Makers

The 'Day in the Life' is a photographic idea that I’ve wanted to offer for a while, and over the last year I’ve worked with a few businesses in London and Derbyshire to create some great content for social media, their own blogs and for magazine articles.

In my wedding photography I work in a documentary style which focuses on capturing genuine moments to create a clear narrative that tells the couple's wedding day story. There are very few posed shots and no contrived scenes as the focus is on honest photography that shows what really happened in the most sympathetic light. It's this approach that got me thinking about the 'Day in the Life' project for small businesses.

The aim of this is to offer a service that creates a 'Day in the Life' photographic series for artisans, craftspeople and small businesses. As a creative and small business owner myself I'm fully aware that everything that goes in to creating the finished product (the time, the creativity, the energy, the costs) is something that the buying public have little knowledge of. For the most part they just see the piece of furniture, the frothy pint, the framed painting with no comprehension of the full creative process behind it, meaning that people struggle to see the value, both monetary and artistically, of the work that these craftspeople invest so much of their heart and soul in to.

The series of images that we create will aim to tell the real story behind both your products and the people who make them. In a world where social media has made transparency a real marketing tool, I believe that having the ability to show your potential customers the authenticity of your work; the processes, the materials, the skills, has never been more important. And with so many platforms available, which all require regular and new content (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, tumblr, Pinterest, personal and industry blogs) as well as more traditional marketing methods, photographs such as these have many benefits.
